As I reflect upon the past year, I appreciate all of the new friends that I have made through dog therapy. Each monthly visit at Eagle Crest was met with the mentoring of a new therapy dog. It's hard to believe that I have been doing this for over five years. I have almost 150 therapy dog visits in the books. I have attended therapy dog trainings and testing with my mom to help other canines achieve their goals. I know that I need to be on my best behavior to model the desired behavior expected by all certified TDI therapy dogs - including my two sisters.
Even though it is hard to share the attention with my mentees during the visits, I know that the people I love need more visitors like me who will provide them with additional love and support. It is important for me to build trust and encourage both the dog and their handler by instructing and inspiring them through my actions. Some of the things that we try do is:
- Bring joy and laughter, even for a short time
- Taking a person's mind off of personal problems, aches, pains and worries
- Getting people to share their stories
- Giving a chance for people to gather and socialize with others
- Lowering stress levels and blood pressure
- Rekindling warm memories of their pets
I have discovered that the more I give, the more I receive. By opening doors to new opportunities and sharing my vocation with others the more doors are opened to me. I look forward to more visits and also working with more friends in the new year. 🐾
